IP CCTV SURVEILLANCE : Industry Standards

IP CCTV SURVEILLANCE : Industry Standards

In today’s world, IP CCTV systems are widely used for the surveillance & many brands from different manufacturers worldwide are in market. Every manufacturer produces the IP CCTV using some propriety protocols & usually compatible with own Software’s & Network Video recorders. But this places the status quo for all brands other than the one we are using for specific project or application. This status quo affects scalability as well as monopolizes the market

Interoperability is what is needed. The interoperability allows using different brands of IP cameras with different brands of Network Video Recorders & IP cameras. For the purpose of interoperability, the security Industry have developed & adapted some open standards required for the interoperability is RTSP, PSIA & ONVIF.

RTSP, Real Time Streaming Protocol is an application-level protocol to enable the control of multiple data delivery sessions, delivery of data (Audio & Video) with real-time properties. The streams are delivered using RTP (Real Time Transport Protocol) and RTP offers a variety of delivery mechanisms to support various network configurations & performance requirements. The Integration for various IPCCTV Systems is done using this protocol but RTSP supports only live streaming while as camera discovery & automatic configuration is not possible.

PSIA, Physical Security Interoperability Alliance is the global consortium of physical security manufacturers & system integrators enabling & promoting the interoperability of IP-enabled security devices like IP CCTV cameras, Intrusion Alarm Systems & Sensors, Network based access controls, Video analytics & management systems, Physical security information management etc. The models released so far are IP Media Device Specification, Recording and Content management (RaCM) Specification, Video Analytics Specification, Common Metadata and Event Model, Area Control Specification, Profiles for Access Control and Intrusion Detection. PSIA enables automatic camera detection & configuration and live streaming using the RTSP protocol.

ONVIF, Open Network Video Interface Forum, founded by Axis Communication, Sony Corporation & Bosch in 2008, is the most active and well known forum for compliance in IP CCTV Industry for setting & main objectives of Onvif are as

Standardization of communication between network video devices

Interoperability between network video products regardless of manufacturer

Open to all companies and organizations

Onvif defines the framework for network video communication based on the standards of IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) & Web services, the specifications covered in version 1.0 are

IP configuration, Device discovery, Device management, Media configuration, Real time viewing, Event handling, PTZ camera control, Video analytics and security. On the basis of the specifications released by the Onvif, the Onvif Profiles guarantee the interoperability between the conformant devices. The common functionalities addressed by the

Profile S  :  IP video systems, such as video and audio streaming, PTZ controls, and relay activation.

Profile C : IP access control systems, such as door state and control, credential management, and event handling.

Profile  G   :  Video storage, Recording, search, and retrieval.

Profile Q  : (Release Candidate) is for the device discovery and configuration, as well as the management of TLS certificates and keys.
